It achieves this by employing mechanical force, usually through high-speed rotation or oscillation, to break down the sample's cellular structure and create a homogeneous mixture. Electric tissue homogenizers typically consist of a motorized base unit with a variety of interchangeable attachments. The heart of the device is a rotor or probe that moves at high speeds, often exceeding 20,000 revolutions per minute (RPM). Researchers can choose different rotor configurations, such as stainless steel blades, beads, or grinding chambers, depending on their specific sample and application requirements.

To use the homogenizer, the sample is placed in an appropriate vessel, such as a tube or flask, and the rotor is immersed into the sample. When activated, the rotor rapidly agitates the sample, breaking down the cellular structure and dispersing it throughout the liquid medium.
